- Poetry Nara is the site of that rarest of birds, a truly fine, living poet. Jonathan Brewer is a true craftsman of the word, with an incredible observation of the fine details of his surroundings, both physical and spiritual. In his new works Phantom City and the Mirror Pine, he breathes life into the stones and rooftops, and wells and streets of Kyoto and Nara, perceiving the underlying symbolic connections of Japanese History, Buddhist Sutra, Western literature and modern day life as if he lives in all times and places at once. His words, both written and spoken, have greatly inspired me to look closer and speak clearer in my songs.
