Music and the minotaur: Purity and Purifying in the Age of Information Overload

Making Music in the 21st century, you gotta be pure and you gotta not care about success. There are simply too many great musicians doing great stuff out there. And there are so many ones who don’t really cut the cake who make it to the place where they get to eat it and have it both ways. I’ve listened to musicians in Ireland, Cuba, Japan who blow away anything on the big stages now, but they are respectively playing in little pubs for a pint, on the street for a dime, or actually paying a club for the space to which they have to drag their own friends as audience. In Japan the number of truly talented musicians is staggering.
The Pagans recently played at the Takastuski Jazz Street where we have played for the last 5 years. And not getting our favored spot, 8pm, we happily settled for 5pm at Bird, so we could enjoy some of the hundreds of bands. The festival boasts 600 bands playing on 40 different stages over two days. Like most Jazz festivals there’s a lot of bend to allow for bands like, well like the Pagans, who touch on Jazz the way a lot of 60s bands did, via blues, roots. There are funk bands, gospel, Dixie, blues, bluegrass, big band, swing, and jazz standards, acid jazz, gypsy, jumpy, scat bebop and just jazz. Solos, duos, trios, quartets, quintets, I swear I even saw quintuplets.
While the streets sadly aren’t closed to traffic, they are full of people; the entrance fees are free, and the beer is plenty. People are happy. The music goes from sloppy to divine to down right brilliant. No one is paid. But we are singing our hearts out and there is a electric happiness in the air. The electricity of appreciation and hearts happy with the energy of music played for music’s sake. And most of these musicians will return to day jobs. They prostitute themselves for survival, but their music is pure and their talent is expansive and ever expanding.
It’s hard in this day and age with never ending influx of information, contact with everyone around the world, to keep centered in self, to keep clear and believe in your self in the face of infinite competition. The only way, and it doesn’t matter what you do, but the key is don’t compete. Just do what you love to do. Do it your best and don’t worry about the rest. Oh listen for new ideas, keep open, support other musicians, but find your thread, and follow it into the labyrinth. Get in touch with your beast, your minotaur. Don’t slay it. Treat it well. Bring it out with you. Harness its strength! Let it sing its heart out through your lungs. Let it bellow.
Look at the sorrow in Picasso’s minotaur. Sing that sorrow. Sing your truth, no matter how hidden and dark. Bring it to the light so it need no feed on negativity. Kept inside it festers and sprouts in an ugly way, like a catholic priest’s sexuality. Use song to purify yourself. That’s what I do, I sing to purify the darkness I see all around, to cleanse the world. I hope my songs help to clear your head and heart. Listen deep.

Dearest Desmond Boswell, "Hermit of Hudson" dies

Last Week Desmond Boswell, the famous "Hermit of Husdon," Died.
For the hundreds of people who knew him closely, this is a great loss.
He was an extremely special and rare person who had compassion for all living things refused to participate in modern society as he saw it too destructive to the environment. Any who took the time to talk to him, were immediately touched by his incredible love, kindness, and gentleness. But those who did not take the time often feared him and saw him as a "no good hippy drug addict." The obituary in the local Hudson Gazette, although they kindly printed some truths, sadly fell into this trap, leaving the impression that Desmond was the way he was because of drugs and not because of intelligence, consciousness and compassion. i wrote a letter to the Gazette, but they did not publish it, so I publish it here and on facebook in the hopes that others will see and know.
In Memory of a Special Teacher, Desmond Boswell.
I write to correct a few mistakes in your obituary on Desmond Boswell. Contrary to your claim, Desmond almost never touched drugs or drank alcohol. You can ask that of anyone who spent time with him and did not simply judge him from afar. Many people also accused him of dealing drugs, but if that were the case he would not have been living on handouts. He was simply tolerant of other people's vices, so he put up with the many people around him who did. . His only vice was Tobacco, which killed him as he knew it would.
In reality he was an extremely decent humanbeing--Buddha or Christlike if you will--who would give a stranger his last piece of toast and starve himself. And he gave away lots: cars, cups of tea, time and especially wisdom. How many people do you know who would talk to a mosquito to convince it not to bite them? Or hold a raccoon hit by a car for 6 hours and talk to it to comfort it while it was dying? While many find such examples laughable, the compassion behind it was anything but. His love and genuine concern for others meant that many people who could not cope with the modern world were attracted to him and sought his sympathy. And he opened the eyes to the realities of society to many, many others who could, making them into better people, less judgmental of other humans, yet more critical thinking citizens.
Although a recluse, he also participated in many town hall meetings--often in nothing but a loin cloth and accompanied by many dogs and a rabbit-- and felt a real responsibility towards society.
He made you feel like he saw only the good part of you. Just talking to him always made me feel up--evaporated my worries as he seemed so happy with so little. I recall finding him once after the town tore down his house, living in a lean-to made out of a fence and a plastic tarpaulin. It was just big enough to lie down in and have an extra seat to sit and cook in. It was -20 out and only a kerosene stove heated the place. He was naked and perfectly happy. Offered me a cup of tea. Its how the CBC found him when it did its story about him: totally at peace in circumstances that many would find dire.
One felt around him, "okay, if I screw up and fail it doesn't matter so much." Stay true to yourself; be kind to others, take only what you need, respect the earth and you will be at peace.
He was an extremely rare person who decided to opt out of society as much as he could in this era in which such an option is almost impossible. So many of us complain about capitalism's devastation of the environment, but only Des actually walked out of it and refused to participate. He was conscious of this decision: he had read Thoreau and referred to Ghandi often. Of course he was not perfect. He would be the first to admit it, for he was extremely honest with himself.
Nonetheless, he fulfilled a role so rare in the modern world, that of "hermit" sage. I know some take offence to this label. But I mean it well, as I did in the original article using the title(Montreal Gazette June 5th, 1994, Section C). In medieval times that was actually a respected role in (or on the edge of ) society; someone who made people reflect on life. We strangely have supposedly become more liberal and tolerant and yet so many people badgered Desmond and accused him of all sorts of things simply because he did not follow the way of the majority. Like Socrates, his very existence brought into question people's value systems and brought down their property values. And this inspired the many misunderstandings about him, like that he was a drug addict. Only a legal drug addict: tobacco.
We will miss him dearly. Yet he lives on in the heart of so many people. Kevin Ryan started a facebook blog on him and dozens of people have poured in their stories. It is really beautiful. One feels he is here still, teaching.
Sincerely
Keith Adams

The Emergent Sea Reviewed by Rice B & Radioindy

It's no wonder that Roman Rhodes and the Born Again Pagans' fine CD is titled "The Emergent Sea." Of its 16 folk / jazz / pop-rock hybrid songs, 8 pieces refer to the ocean - directly or by inference, in their titles. More interesting, is that for this accomplished, multi-cultural band, the predominant sound the unique synthesis of such musical styles evokes is altogether that of California coastline vistas on warm summer nights. Built on light, breezy, and melodic contemporary folk-rock along the lines of Jack Johnson (but incorporating flourishes of late '60's / early '70's pop-rock and jazz styles as well), Roman and his Pagans deliver spirited and decidedly spiritual, tunes that celebrate life and nature with a keen inventiveness, both musically and lyrically. The opening (title) track, "The Emergent Sea," with its free-flight flute backing and tasteful guitar interpolations, sets the tone for the disc, while other highlights incorporate judicious horns as heard on "Odysseus," syncopated rhythms on "A Man Once Called Me," Youngbloods like guitar fills on "Long Talk Off a Short Beer," and even some good-old down-home reminiscing on "Grandma's Telecaster (The Good Old Days.)" "The Emergent Sea" offers an excellent showcase for the skills and influences of players with origins that stretch from Scotland to Japan and sundry points in between, but what ultimately makes Roman Rhodes and the Born Again Pagans' CD so effective is the cohesive, well balanced, and accessible music at its core.

New Bass Player

Sadly, Masahiko Yasumoto had to stop for a while due to job hassles, but the very talented and busy Jazz Bassist Tsubakihara Hidehiro will be joining the Pagans for a number of shows; Hotstaff on the 12th, Mcloughlin's on the 30th of March and Bird on the 3rd of May. Hopefully he will become a regular member.

The Emergent Sea

The Pagans are hard at work on their new CD. Roman Rhodes has written a whole bunch of powerful new tunes. This albums promises to be more united in theme and style.
The songs are proving to be some of his most powerful stuff yet. Nice mellow, sexy edge with the muted trumpet, over top more powerful drums and bass section. Look for the lyrics soon to be posted on his music page in the near future.

Pagans Born Yet Again with the EMERGENT SEA songs

The months of practicing new songs with new bass player Masahiko Yasumoto and Trumpet Player Chirstopher Fryman are coming together and out and alive. Old Pagans Drummer Moray Crawford is back and kicking. The band is souding more professional than ever and the new material is tight. The new songs combine some of the old country-Celtic-roots rock, with a more mellow and sultry blues-jazz sound heightened by the addition of a the sweet muted trumpet of Christopher Fryman. A mix of powerful peace, environmental, cultural and love tunes in a more blues & Jazz vein. Hope you enjoy.

Kirk MacGeachy Dies

The warm and wonderful Kirk MacGeachy died suddenly of heart attack. His silver voice, his wit and wildness will be missed by 1000s around the globe. I helped Kirk with the words to his title track song, Moon on the Ocean. He was an incredible man and inspiration to me. Since I moved to Japan, Kirk and Pat came over for dinner when I returned to Canada every summer. I will miss him dearly. In his memory, I will add my own version of Moon on the Ocean to the next CD, The Emergent Sea. And I've written a song for him that will be recorded on the next to next. For now here is my obiturary for Kirk: To know Kirk is to love him. He, like dear Pat, is a free spirit who touches every heart who meets him(yes even now), fills it with laughter and a natural joy of life. A voice like silver-gold moonlight shimmering on Loch Gairloch, on the western shores of the Hebridean Islands, in the cool clear waters of the North Atlantic, He has not gone, he is only roving, his heart called him home. You'll see him anywhere the moonlight plays on water and where his songs live on, with his voice in our hearts.

Wonderful Nara

Rhodes has written a new song about Nara, for the neo-Buddhist group Shinji Sumeikai.
The words for this one were provided by Reiko Daimon, while Rhodes composed the music.
the theme of the song is about helping others. It will be performed on April 16th at Nara's Shumeikai hall and later be made into a limited edition CD for the members of Shumeikai who number over 100,000. It was this group that formed a chior and performed his Million Thanks at the World Parliament of Religions in Barcelona Spain.
